How I afford a life full of travel

Here's the secret on how to afford a life full of travel

How do you afford to see all of those places? How have you paid to go all over the world? I get this question ALL the time, and I’ve gotten asked a lot more now that I’ve created the brand, Traveling the Lunaverse.

While living in Thailand, I remember drinking my morning coffee to the most serene ocean views. I’d be relaxing on the balcony of the bungalow I rented for 3 months after a morning of scuba diving with whale sharks in the gulf of Thailand, drinking an afternoon beer and playing ukulele. Would you believe me if I told you that an ocean view bungalow with one bedroom, air conditioning, a full kitchen and wifi in South East Asia cost no more than $250 a month?

What you first need to understand about me is I am living two different chapters of the same story. Before getting pregnant,I worked as a scuba diving instructor. A job with high demand and endless oceans created amazing flexibility. I lived on islands in the USVI, Thailand, Fiji, and on a boat that anchored around St. Kitts, Saba, and St. Maarten. Everywhere I went, I worked. I had a constant income while living and submerging myself into different cultures and oceans.

That was my before.

And this is my after. Now that I have Luna, I don’t see myself living that same exact lifestyle- yet I will live a similar one. We’re going to travel the world together now. But Cassie, how will you afford that?! Were you paying attention? I’ve already given away the secret to being able to afford to live around the world.

I’m currently finishing a degree in journalism and media studies, which I ultimately want to use to find remote work in travel journalism. As I travel for work, I plan to bring my daughter with me. We’ll work together, explore together, and embrace new places together. Remote work is simple in 2021. You just need the ambition to find it.

Did you pick up on the secret yet?

Find a career that brings you where you want to go. For me that was scuba diving and now it’s writing.

For you, it can be anything! Travel careers are abundant and diverse. Have you heard of seasonal positions? Maybe you’ve already met some travel nurses, doctors, accountants, waitresses, sales clerks, and veterinarians. The list is endless.

  • I have a wonderful friend who’s finishing vet school soon. She wants to buy a boat and sail to different islands running spay and neuter clinics wherever she docks. You have the ability to combine passions and create amazing reality’s, too.

  • I have another friend who bought an RV and drives around the states parking at national parks, free campgrounds, or wherever the heck her road leads too. She works as a contract writer.

  • I have friends who are travel nurses.

  • I have friends who are traveling photographers.

  • I have a friend who is a project manager with new projects every few months that take him across the states.

The opportunity is there. Do some research. Put your heart into it. Combine your career with the travel lifestyle you’ve always desired and go out and see the world!

And one more thing that is SO important to affording a life full of travel: PRIORITIES.

I’m huge on priorities. My high school boyfriend’s dad once taught me about the wants and needs, and it’s stuck with me forever- so much that I literally live my life by sorting out my wants vs my needs. (Shout out to Mr. Wishbow, THANK YOU for spewing the lifelong knowledge!)

When you learn the difference between what you want and what you need, you’ll be surprised at what happens.

You need food. You need a roof over your head. You need to drink water. We all know that.

You WANT a fancy meal. You WANT a glass of wine. You WANT that 5 star villa on the water. But you don’t need any of those things. You can budget yourself down and travel strictly on your needs, skip out on those wants, and save *SO MUCH MONEY.*

I’ve been choosing my needs over my wants for over a decade now. Stop getting your nails done, stop paying monthly TV subscriptions, stop eating out. You don’t need to choose the room with a view for double the price.

Don't forget to subscribe to my blog because I’m about to SPIT SOME TRUTH, and help you learn how to find affordable accommodation that suits your needs from every corner of the world.

Let me know your own secrets to living a life of travel! Are you ready to give up some of those unnecessary wants, start focusing on those needs, and saving up for that first one way flight? Comment below! I can’t wait to hear.
